Nicola's Fund Charity
This year's charity is one we have had some involvement with for some time on the publishing side of our business, Nicola's Fund.
Nicola was beautiful, clever, talented, funny, warm, mischievous and very kind. Small in stature, with a huge and dirty laugh - she sparkled for us all. Her gifts in drama and dance recognised at her first school, Merton House were developing in an exiting way at Hammond School, Chester, before her illness brought her future plans to an abrupt end.
For three years she fought a courageous battle with a malignant brain tumour, before she lost that fight and died 5 days before her 15th birthday on April 20, 2005. During her lengthy, protracted treatment, Nicola faced the trials of chemotherapy and radiotherapy with great bravery. Although she was often in pain she managed to sustain her family and friends with her high spirits and her laughter.
Despite her illness Nicola was able to have a special holiday in Florida and to realise her lifetime ambition of swimming with dolphins. Whilst on this trip her thoughts were for the children who weren’t able to travel great distances and enjoy the sights she had seen.
She also spent a wonderful week at Center Parcs where she enjoyed all the activities including riding a bike, riding a horse, crazy golf and swimming. With this in mind, her family and friends have decided to set up a fund, which will enable children who are suffering with cancer to have a special time and to aid their progress during this difficult period.
Nicola's love and concern for all other children will be continued...
How it helps...
Nicola’s Fund is a special charity as it was set up to fulfil a child’s dream and so far they are making that happen.
When you find out that your child has cancer and could be on constant treatment for up to three years, certain things disappear from your mind. You certainly do not think about holidays but holidays can be the best treatment a child can have. One of the things that the doctors tell you is to try and keep the child’s life as normal as possible, followed by do’s and dont's that make you wonder how life can be normal again. Nicola’s fund makes life a little bit more normal without putting your child at risk.
The fund also gives holidays to the children that are not destined to beat the cancer. Again this is probably the last thing on people’s minds but a holiday at center parcs with £500 spending money gives the child an enjoyable time and also the family a happy time to remember.
